完全纯手工制作，天然植物漆髹(xiu)涂几百层而成，手感极为细腻,经久弥润。
雕漆工艺品是中华民族传统手工艺品。始于汉、唐、盛于明清，已有一千四百余年的历史。它与景泰蓝、牙雕、玉雕并称北京四大特种工艺品，而雕漆尤显皇家气派，高贵典雅。雕漆是把漆的优良特性，与古老精湛的雕刻技艺完美的融合在一起，是中国独有的东方瑰宝和艺术精华。雕漆制品造型浑厚大方，色彩沉稳，文饰精细，具有极高的艺术价值，故宫博物院和各大博物馆均有珍藏。北京雕漆与湖南湘绣、江西景德镇瓷器并驾齐驱，名扬四海，被誉为：中国工艺美术三长。
北京雕漆的材质，是从漆树(漆树产于中国，约10年树龄可割取树液──生漆)上采割下来的天然液汁，经过沉淀，即形成所谓的大漆。再加入极少量的矿物质，通过一定的工艺加工，即形成熟漆，就可以开始制作雕漆制品。天然大漆一般都是红的，加的矿物质不同而已 。(并不是在外面刷一层红漆，更不要把该产品当成是木头外面涂一层红漆)。
北京雕漆的制作，首先制好造型各异的木制胎体，然后调好漆料，在此胎体上涂上八九十道至几百道天然漆，厚度达几毫米至几厘米，趁其未干透时，大师艺人运用各种刀法，在漆层上精心雕出花纹成，然后再烘干、磨光。它具有坚固耐磨、永不褪色的特点。使用时间越长，那种古朴、润泽的光亮越加明显。 　
北京既是雕漆的起源地，也是中国漆器的代表，古时多作为皇家贡品。

Beijing Carved Lacquer Ware ,one of China’s traditional arst and crafts with a history of long standing, originated in the Han Dynasty and has been handed down and developed by the working people from generation to generation. Multifarious in kind and exquisite in workmanship, carved lacquer ware is noted for its unique stvle characterized by elegant modeling,beautiful figuration and lustrous colour.
Carved lacquer ware is hand-made and its manufacturing processes include body-making,internal enamel-coating through burning, background-coating, lacquer-application, design-tracing, engraving and burnishing. Copper or other materiasls are used for making the body, on which tens of layers of lacquer are coated, and sometimes as much as two hundred layers, as the case requires. Then on the lacquer layers, attractive motifs against a background of multifarious floral designs are carved by artisans’ cunning knife-work.
